Davos Kloster, a famous painting by Kirchner, literally translated to: Davos Monastery.
What is expressionism?
Expressionism is an artistic style in which the artist attempts to depict not objective reality but rather the subjective emotions and responses that object and events arouse in him.
He accomplishes his aim through distortion, exaggeration, primitivism and fantasy and through the vivid, jarring, violent, or dynamic application of formal elements. In a broader sense Expressionism is one of the main currents of art in the late 19th and 20th centuries, and its qualities of highly subjective, personal, spontaneous self-expression are typical of a wide range of modern artists and art movements.
A famous expressionist artist?
If you beforehand didn't know what expressionism was, why would you know any expressionist artist? Luckily I am here to introduce a new artist to you!
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a painter born in Aschaffenburg, Germany on the 6th of May 1880. He represents the expressionist art of Germany. A lot of people saw him as the chairman of ''Die Brücke'', a artists collective which was active from 1905 until 1913, later on it collapsed. When he was younger he worked in a paper factory and later became a professor, once he was a professor he moved to Dresden to study engineering. After founding ''Die Brücke'' he lived in Dresden for a few more years and later decided to move to Berlin. In Berlin he firstly didn't succeed because his painting style was very unfamiliar, but after a while he became very famous.
